The Yoga Tree:
A Holistic Approach to Environmental Education

A Three Hour Workshop for Educators

The word yoga means union. Using the eight limbs or paths of yoga, we will present a holistic approach to environmental education which unites environmental consciousness with right action. We will examine from a yoga view what constitutes a successful learning environment . As well, we will present some ECO YOGA lessons. No yoga experience required. Using the image of a tree to guide us, sample topics include:

  1. Universal principles to live by: our environmental foundation – The Roots

  2. Our strength as environmental educators – personal disciplines – The Tree Trunk

  3. Physical Yoga Postures – ECO YOGA – The Tree Branches

  4. The practice of connecting with nature and harmony – breathing and relaxation techniques – The Leaves of the Tree

  5. One sightedness in our goals – Focus and Concentration – The Bark and Sap of the Tree

  6. The Blossoming – Integrating an environmental consciousness into action – The Tree Flowers

  7. Harmony and Union – Achieving working solutions – The Tree Fruit

  8. Sample ECO YOGA lesson plans drawing on:

    A. Our relationship with nature as well as with the built environment.

    B. Poses to stretch our bodies and minds and connect us with plants and animals.

    C. Breathing and relaxation techniques to bring harmony and heighten our collective consciousness.

Sample ECO Yoga lessons will be presented with modifications for special needs students, presenting in various environments (inside or outside), age levels and working across curriculums.

Our goal in these lessons is to bring health (physical, mental and spiritual) and environmental awareness to the participants and to the earth in a fun and unique way.

ECO YOGA
50 minute student classes

Fifty minute lessons using yoga poses, breathing and relaxation to teach children in a hands-on way about the earth. No previous yoga experience required. All are welcome regardless of age or level of fitness.

We love to teach these classes outside but a large indoor space also works. Lots of movement, sounds and getting down on the ground. Children are encouraged to participate to their ability and comfort level.

Eco Yoga lesson plans:

  • Combine physical, mental and emotional health with nature awareness.
  • Highlight our relationship with nature.
  • Use poses to awaken the body/mind and integrate information.
  • Connect children with nature stories using multiple intelligences.
  • Use breathing and relaxation for harmony.
  • Sample topics include:

    • Wetlands - Become a part of a wetlands community and join our web of life.
    • Bats - Play Echolocation Tag
    • Horseshoe Crabs - Who will be the survivor?
